Healing at Your Own Pace

Healing at Your Own Pace

Grief & trauma therapy with Maria Georgopoulos

Psychotherapist, educator, and author

I have devoted more than 20 years to helping people work through loss and various life transitions.

Throughout my career, I have placed a priority on increasing community awareness of living with loss, emphasizing the importance of educating people about the effects of death and non-death loss in our lives.

A safe space to begin your healing process

Maria Georgopoulos, LMHC, FT - Grief and Trauma Therapist in NY

Some life experiences are so intensely painful and disorienting, we may wonder whether we will ever heal. A deep personal loss or traumatic event can leave us feeling lost, confused, full of anger, or hopeless.

After more than two decades of supporting people through difficult times like these, I have seen again and again that the safe space of therapy can make healing possible where it seemed nearly impossible before.

When we are truly seen by a compassionate witness, without judgment or pressure, we can begin to discover who we have become and find our way forward.

“Grieving doesn’t make you imperfect. It makes you human.”

-Sarah Dessen

My approach to therapy and grief counseling

As a therapist, I see myself as a highly trained guide and companion to your journey through a difficult period in your life. Therapy is a collaborative effort. I have extensive clinical expertise in treating trauma, grief, addictions, and other issues — but the expert on your inner experience is you. We will set goals based on your input, and I’ll be asking for your feedback throughout our work together to track our progress.

The foundation of my therapeutic style is warmth, curiosity, and respect, with a relational framework that views our interactions in sessions as part of the work that happens in therapy. I draw from several therapeutic models (including Sensorimotor Psychotherapy as well as attachment and psychodynamic theories) which allows me to tailor my approach for your specific needs.

I often integrate my knowledge of somatic therapy, which gives us an opportunity to identify how our bodies affect our thoughts and feelings and how they can play a role in our healing.

“Your heart has grown heavy with loss;
And though this loss has wounded others too,
No one knows what has been taken from you
When the silence of absence deepens.”

-“For Grief” by John O’Donohue

Although I work with all ages and occupations, many of my clients are creative professionals such as writers, singers, artists, and producers who find that my flexible and integrative style is a good fit for them.

Having experienced my own personal losses at an early age, I am able to offer genuine empathy for those who have experienced the death of someone significant in their lives. My mother’s death many years ago when I was 20 years old has colored every aspect of my life. Back in those days, there was little grief support available and I often found myself very much alone in my pain. I want to make sure others know they do not have to suffer through loss on their own.

I also understand what it’s like to be a therapy client. I value personal therapy very highly and have engaged in therapy myself at many times in my life, along with ongoing clinical supervision and training for continued professional growth.
